ESG Lab Report Validates the Business Value of Aviatrix for AWS Public Cloud

Aviatrix has received some nice kudos in a report from the Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) industry analysts. The just-released ESG Lab report validates the business value to enterprises of integrating Aviatrix cloud connectivity software with Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The small irony is that the ESG Lab Review report is all about SD-WAN integration with AWS—and we’re not even an SD-WAN company! But our comprehensive cloud connectivity solution includes the SD-WAN capability of establishing encrypted connections between an enterprise’s datacenter or sites with AWS. Because Aviatrix is able to deliver this same capability as SD-WAN vendors, AWS requested that we be among the nine vendors included in the ESG Lab report.

In addition to providing the SD-WAN capabilities included in the ESG Lab testing, Aviatrix technology also does much, much more. In the AWS realm, Aviatrix secures peering connections that are native to the AWS service while automating in-the-cloud and multi-cloud connectivity.

As a result, organizations’ DevOps and cloud operations teams can establish the secure connectivity they need, within and between AWS cloud resources, without having to be networking experts or run command-line interface (CLI). This is why many of our AWS customers with Direct Connect are deploying our global transit and services architecture for all the reasons outlined here.

More broadly, the Aviatrix built-for-cloud approach delivers ‘network as code,’ a dramatic advance over the virtual routers (vRouters) that traditional networking companies offer.

The network-as-code approach enables automation that allows cloud and DevOps teams to deploy and change cloud connections at cloud speeds—securely, reliably, and, again, without having to be a network guru. We hear so often from our customers who are part of the cloud team that  they can’t afford for their projects to be held up by networking. They need networking connectivity to be part of the cloud stack, right alongside their deployment, build, and configuration management tools.

Here are some of the words that the ESG Lab report uses to describe what’s important about Aviatrix:

“Creating a hybrid infrastructure environment using traditional networking presents numerous challenges. IT/network professionals must manage multiple IP addresses of an organization’s sites—offices, data centers, cloud platforms, etc.—to construct a highly available mesh network. Individually monitoring and managing these sites drives up costs. ESG Lab confirmed that Aviatrix Cloud Interconnect enables its customers to create and manage a hybrid infrastructure environment that integrates with AWS by abstracting IP addresses, automating connections, and providing complete visibility into the network with a single management interface.”

ESG conducted rigorous evaluation and hands-on testing scenarios of Aviatrix products. The ESG Lab review confirmed that Aviatrix Cloud Interconnect enables enterprises to connect all their sites—datacenters, Amazon VPCs, and branches. ESG Lab validated how Cloud Interconnect integrates with AWS and performs under all eight use cases tested, including:

  • Link performance between instances deployed in two VPCs located in the US-East and US-West regions
  • Support for high-availability deployments via route shifting
  • Ability to interoperate with the AWS Virtual Private Gateway (VGW) and third-party edge routers
  • The Aviatrix software’s operations dashboard to centrally visualize all VPCs, their subnets, and the traffic flow

The ESG Lab Review report also included the following highlights about Aviatrix performance in its testing:

  • Aviatrix delivers its solution via virtual appliance or as an Amazon Machine Image (AMI) on AWS; no hardware appliances are required.
  • Aviatrix Cloud Interconnect supports single-root I/O virtualization (SR-IOV), which allows higher I/O performance on network interfaces with lower central processing unit (CPU) utilization. Thus, it can deliver higher throughput, decreasing latencies between SR-IOV-enabled instances. Aviatrix supports SR-IOV on allowable C3 and C4 instances within the list of allowable Aviatrix instances on AWS Marketplace.
  • Aviatrix Cloud Interconnect supports numerous T2, M3, C3, and C4 instances to ensure a range of cost options. Organizations can use a larger instance with more interfaces and support for many network services (e.g., firewall, management, and demilitarized zone [DMZ]) should they require it.
  • Cloud Interconnect supports instance high-availability deployments via route shifting.
  • Cloud Interconnect can interoperate with the virtual private gateway on AWS as well as third-party edge routers. This offers customers the flexibility to integrate existing network services.
  • Cloud Interconnect provides an operations dashboard to centrally visualize all Amazon VPCs, their subnets, and the traffic flow. Aviatrix Cloud Interconnect provides a unified system to capture packets in/out of Amazon VPCs, to inspect VPC configuration, to run utilities such as traceroute, and to collect the software logs for analysis.
